it has begun

today i faced my first challenge as an easily amused parent. nissa and i are eating our usual turkey paprikash when nissa decides to take an errant noodle off of one cheek and place it on the other cheek. then she took a carrot slice and stuck it in her ear. next was a piece of ground turkey into the other ear.

at first, i laughed. then it was a chuckle-"no" combination. it took a few tries to shake the stifled giggle and smile and sternly "no" the situation. it was hard!

i'm in so much trouble the next time she discovers something hilarious that she's not supposed to do. i've nearly failed this time around :P

new tricks

nissa is always full of new tricks. here are some of the latest.

i was holding nissa on my hip when she seemed to say "hey!" she pushed my cheek to put us face to face and planted a bit ol' kiss on my lips! it was crazy. she then carried on with whatever babbling she was doing. wonder if that will continue?

i'm pleased to say that walking is now her preferred mode of transportation. sure, she'll crawl on occasion, but usually only if she's tired. if she stumbles, she is getting right back up (rather efficiently now), when before she might resort to crawling the rest of the way. with all the practice she's getting in, i'm sure she'll be a pro walker in no time at all.

in an effort to include nissa in the conversation, i put my dad on speaker phone with my cell. it worked out great because usually when you put the phone up to nissa's ear and she hears the other person, she just pulls the phone away to look at it and giggles. cute as that is, it's not that exciting for the other end. the speakerphone, however, was fascinating for her and she really had a lot more to say. the best part was that she really favored yelling at the speaker phone, like a grandma trying to use it, not familiar with the technology. she'd lean over and shout right at it, then back away until she had something else to say. it was hilarious to watch.

when i got nissa up one morning, i was wearing my bulls t shirt from '91. yep, first of many world championships! and i could even name the starting line up. i was impressed with myself. so, in typical nissa fashion, she pointed at the items on my shirt and said something. so i took that opportunity to introduce her to the '91 starting line up. . . when she pointed out the chicago bulls logo, i said "bull." and the crazy thing that happened next was that she seemed to try to imitate what i said. we went back and forth 3-4 times and she was actually trying to perfect her pronunciation! it was really exciting to see her trying to improve her speaking and was neat to watch. i guess that means we'll be getting a lot more words from her soon?

in a vain effort to instill some good oral hygiene practices, we've begun brushing teeth before nissa's bedtime. so her routine is now to kiss daddy good night, crawl upstairs herself, then into the bathroom upstairs where i'll brush her teeth (all 8 of them!!), we change her diaper and into pjs, nurse and to bed. but the funniest thing about this new habit is nissa's new word- "TEETH"! when we get up into the bathroom, she'll say "teeth, teeth" and it's super cute. she'll say it again when we're done and smile big in the mirror. after we wave good bye to the tooth brush in the vanity, of course.

while eating dinner together recently, nissa insisted on ripping off her bib. i tried to put it back on, but she pulled it off again. adam suggested taking her plate away and telling her the bib being off means she's done with dinner. it seemed a little far fetched for me, but i tried it. she was content to sit there at the table for a few minutes, but soon she wanted her plate again and told her about the bib, so she picked it up to try and put it back on. with a little help from me, she was bibbed again and finishing up her dinner. amazing.

not that this is all that note worthy, but nissa peed in the bath for the first time. it was crazy because it was really easy to see and lingered for a while. it's hard to believe that that was the first time that's happened, but it's true! i tried to make the rest of her bath go quickly after that. the bath was still mostly water, but it icked me out. what can i say?

one step closer to being normal again

today is the first day since i left on maternity leave that i'm going to work in a normal bra. and, since i went shopping (again, for the first time in a long time) last weekend, i have a bra that fits well! no nonsupportive nursing bra, no uniboob nursing tank. all that's next is to loose all this extra weight i'm carrying around and i'll be back to normal completely. of course, i'm not completely free yet; i still have to change into a tank for sleeping and nissa's bedtime feeding :P

last night nissa was full of interesting ideas. when she first came home, we had our usual play session in the frontroom with her climber and the exercise ball. she's really getting into the exercise ball- she likes to pat it, lay on it and push it around. i like to pull her on top of it and roll her side to side. yesterday, she pushed and walked along behind it the length of the dining room. i think that's the longest she's walked yet! i got some of the action on video (with my phone, though- yuck) for the return trip.

then later, when we were playing in her room, she noticed gibson's tail brushing up against one of her toys as we pet him. she then went over to his tail, picked it up and started brushing the toy herself with is tail; essentially wagging it for him. too wacky!

i feel so naked. . .

today is the first day i've gone to work without my pump (while planning to work the full day). it's kinda weird!! i didn't even pump yesterday, so i thought i'd try just leaving it at home today. i'm excited! everyone else is worried about when we're going to wean and now i'm one step closer to sealing the deal.

i do have other random things to jot down, so here goes.

last night nissa and i were hanging in her room (she was playing, i was folding diapers and putting away some toys) and jammin' the "best of war" album. it's perfect! nissa loved the funk (she does have good taste in music) and we had a lot of fun dancing around.

nissa's new trick now is to grab my hands. when she's on her climber and she wants to slide, i'll place her on her butt and offer her my hands so she can pull herself "out" and hold on on the way down. i try not to slow her down too much :D but since we started doing that, she'll grab my hands for other things: in the bathtub, she pulls my hand to the water to have me splash; when she's at the piano keyboard, she'll pull my hand over to the keys to play for her; when she's playing with the exercise ball and she doesn't want me to spot her (yeah right) she'll pull my hand away from the ball.

nissa vs mashed potatoes

why is it that it never fails. . . every time nissa eats mashed potatoes, she makes her "oh no" face- which happens to include putting both hands on top of her head. hands, full of mashed potatoes, pushed up against her hair. what a mess. sure, she does this move other times, but EVERY time she eats mashed potatoes, the hands go on the head. i need to start limiting potatoes to bath days, i guess.

we visited rick yesterday to exchange christmas gifts with (uncle) eric and his family. it was a good time and nissa is starting to interact with others more. unfortunately, this visit's interactions consisted primarily of taking toys away from the others. . . made worse by her being totally over due for a nap. her and sarah checked each other out more, which was fun. the funniest thing was when nissa was climbing around and uncle rick picked her up. i noticed she was missing a shoe and glanced around the room for it. when i asked aloud, we discovered sarah had snatched it up and was laying under the coffee table gnawing on it. here's a fun picture of them standing up together at the coffee table. and yes, nissa is trying to climb up on it, but mostly to try and reach the dog toy. and yes, she does get up onto the table enough to reach it and pull it down. stretch. armstrong. baby!
